Murray served in Ramadi, Iraq with the Iowa Army National Guard, 224th Engineer Battalion. He studies Liberal Arts and Sciences at Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids, IA, and plans to transfer to Iowa State University.

Dustin Crook, 22

Dustin enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserve at age 17. He served in Iraq for 365 days as a Truck Driver for supply convoys that drove in and out of Kuwait. A Psychology major at the University of Kansas, he may go on to a Ph.D. and plans to focus his research or clinical work on PTSD.

Joshua Holder, 27

Joshua was a Nuclear Machinist Mate in the US Navy on the USS Enterprise. He served two tours, beginning in April 2001 and August 2003, in deployments to Afghanistan and Iraq, respectively. He studies Automotive Technology at the NASCAR Technical Institute in North Carolina, aiming for a career with a NASCAR team.

Alexander Kovalerchik, 25

Alexander was born in Belarus and raised in Uzbekistan, was a member of the first U.S. Marine Corps company to enter Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom. He is currently a student at The Community College of Baltimore County, where he is pursuing a degree in Radiography.

Emmanuel Leach, 33

Emmanuel deployed to Iraq in early 2003 with his activated Army National Guard unit and was in-theatre for 525 days. A Cardiovascular Technology student at Southeastern University in our nation’s capital, he plans to finish his Associate Degree and continue his education to become a Physician’s Assistant. Hometown: Washington, DC.


Dean Meadows, 20

Dean enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve in high school, a few weeks before his twin brother did the same. His unit was activated in 2006, and he spent almost a year serving in Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. He is a Political Science major at Longwood University.

Dustin Meadows, 20

Dustin is a U.S. Marine Corps reservist who was stationed as a Combat Engineer in Al Anbar Province when his unit was activated. One of his jobs in Iraq was to be first on the roads, clearing potentially explosive mines to make overland routes safe for U.S. forces and the Iraqi army. A Political Science major at Longwood University in Virginia, he hopes to work for the federal government in a security-related field.

Okazaki, 24

Yumi is pursuing a degree in nursing at Hawaii Pacific University. She enlisted in the Hawaii Army National Guard at age 17 and served her country for almost a year in-theatre in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Sheila Pion, 24

Shelia came to the United States from the Dominican Republic when she was nine years old. She enlisted in the US Army Reserve in high school, served in Iraq in 2004-2005, and may be deploying to Afghanistan in the coming months. A Criminology major at City University of New York’s John Jay College of Criminal Justice, she aspires to a law enforcement career in witness protection or victims’ services.

Matthew Riggle, 32

Matthew chose to extend his contract with the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve after September 11, 2001. As a Motor Vehicle Operator, he served as a driver and convoy leader in Iraq. He is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in the Electro-Mechanical Engineering Technology program, Penn State New Kensington.
